Purple
Heart Memorial Garden
Local
Veterans Organizations, in conjunction with the Wyandotte Cultural
/Historical and Beautification Commissions, is working to restore the
Purple Heart Statue located at the intersection of Biddle Avenue and
Superior Boulevard, in Wyandotte, Michigan. Due to the continuing
deterioration of the statue over the past several decades, we ask for
your help in saving this treasured monument dedicated to the memory of
our brave wounded soldiers.
Originally dedicated by Michigan Governor Harry Kelly in 1943 during the
Second World War, the statue was designed and sculpted by Isadore
DeBiasi of River Rouge. The statue features the poignant image of a US
soldier caring for his wounded brother in arms, the monument was cast in
limestone to stand as a testament to the sacrifice of Michigan
servicemen and women. Wyandotte has the distinguished honor of being the
first city in the country to which the National Military Order of the
Purple Heart commissioned and donated a monument of this type.
The Purple Heart Statue will be carefully removed from its marble base,
and professionally cast in bronze, restoring its faded features and
ensuring the future appreciation of generations. Flanking the statue
will be the Walk of Honor, consisting of engraved memorial bricks.
Bricks will be available for purchase by those who wish to celebrate
accomplishments or in the memory of a loved one. Gracefully standing
watch behind the statue, a permanent honor guard of flags representing
the five branches of service as well as the POW and MIA, will partially
encircle the restored statue. Integrated seating will provide a unique
space for the public to relax and appreciate this noble historic
treasure.
